I thought you had to set stats when you leveled up, like strength, dexterity, intelligence, etc. When I saw a shield that required strength, I assumed it was like all those other rpgs.

I ordered GW Prophecies from Play.com in May 2005. In the couple of days I was waiting for it to arrive I somehow got the impression that your character was in the world with everyone else and that there were no 'private' instances.
I was so confused when I left Ascalon to find myself alone being stalked by this annoying little parasite of a girl (Gwen).
I also thought that nobody in their right mind would buy Fissure armour sets. Same stats as 1.5k Droknar's armour but costing an insane amount of gold?!
Yeah, this is my first online RPG.

I recall thinking that Animate Bone Horrors only worked if you were standing on the corpse. That led to me wonder how I was supposed to deal with those Flame Geysers in the Catacombs. I ended up just running into them and ressing to get rid of them.
Having done the Factions Preview event, I thought I would be nice and quick to get to the Jade Sea in Factions. About 2 hours later, I was still somewhere around Tahnnakai Temple, and getting very tired of the city.

no misconceptions here. guild wars is my first and so far, only massive online game that i play. i come from the first person shooter genre myself. although the no monthly fee was hardly a misconception, it is the reason that i tried something different, because i wanted to prepare myself for a mmo experience as i felt like investing into a unique si-fi rpg sometime in the near future, namely star trek online. but the way things have been going, it doesn't look like sto will turn out well. since i have no other interests in any other games, i decided to stick around with guild wars.

^ This. I did the exact same thing, probably because I wasn't paying attention to the quest log and didn't realize I had to raise a minion so it could set off the geyser
I also talked to Alesia when I got to post-Searing Ascalon because I thought it was a real person who was gonna help me out.
For the longest time in pre I didn't know you could click and drag the world map to zone to outposts that weren't immediately visible. So if I wanted to go from Ascalon City to Fort Ranik, I walked out Ascalon, far enough so Fort Ranik would become visible on the map, and then zoned there.

At first I thought Pre-Ascalon was all there was to it, then i was like HOLY CRAP at the sheer size of the post map.
Then i was a bit disappointed in finding that it wasn't all explorable >.>

I thought that having a unique build was better than having an efficient build for my first 1-2 months. How wrong I was.
